MINNEAPOLIS — Many rural residents of South Dakota will gain access to advanced telecommunications for the first time because of a new FTTH project by Highmore, S.D.-based Venture Communications Cooperative.

Venture, whose project is partly funded by $7 million in broadband stimulus loans and grants, teamed up with Clearfield and Calix for an FTTH deployment that will span more than 900 square miles and serve a trio of communities in north central South Dakota. The ambitious project, which will make triple-play services available to area residents and businesses, began in the spring and will be completed by the end of 2011.

The fiber deployment, which overbuilds existing telecommunications infrastructure, will cover three exchanges and more than 900 access lines in and around the towns of Faulkton, Orient and Cresband. “With our rural build, you plow many miles to get to a very few customers,” says Randy Olson, assistant general manager of Venture. “Traditionally, it’s been difficult getting broadband to a rural market. So, we like to say we had ‘lower-high-speed Internet’ service in the past. There were no video products for rural consumers, and many had coax-based TV service. So our customers are really looking forward to the new services this FTTH project will bring.”

Venture will use PON electronics from Calix along with fiber management devices from Clearfield. Clearfield's FieldSmart FxDS Fiber Distribution System is being used in the central offices - the FxDS frame in Faulkton and FxDS panels in Cresbard and Orient.

Venture’s central-office equipment supervisor Brad Ryan says the company undertook a thorough investigation of fiber management products on the market and selected Clearfield equipment based on its cost effectiveness, fiber management efficiency, ease of access and turn-up, and cleanliness. “Clearfield met our criteria and needs on all these issues,” he says. “We have been using Clearfield products for about four years, and have been very happy with their quality and the very helpful, responsive sales team.”
