OAKLAND, CA — Network access vendor Zhone Technologies announced a new line of indoor optical network terminals (ONTs) for active Ethernet networks, following up on its introduction of indoor models for GPON networks a month ago. ONTs - the devices that terminate fiber optic networks at the customer premises - traditionally are bulky, unsightly items attached to the outsides of buildings, and they were not easily accepted by apartment residents when telcos began wiring multiple-dwelling-unit buildlings with fiber. Apartment dwellers much prefer small, sleek indoor ONTs that don't look out of place on desktops.

Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer of Zhone, says, "The new series of zNID active Ethernet ONTs provide a highly competitive price point while providing a future-proof solution for complex media-rich applications."

Zhone's zNID active Ethernet indoor ONT portfolio is designed to meet the needs of the bandwidth-intensive services being deployed to homes and businesses today and in the future. Integrating the Zhone Management System and EZ Touch Provisioning System, the new indoor ONTs are designed for distances up to 20 km from the central office. They provide multiple POTS and GE port options, Wi-Fi and IP video support, wire-speed bridging and routing functionality. They can be deployed on desktops or wall-mounted.

The three models offered are

  • ZNID-GE-2402: 2 GE LAN ports

  • ZNID-GE-2424: 4 GE LAN ports

  • ZNID-GE-2426: 2 POTS ports, 4 GE LAN ports, 802.11n Wi-Fi, USB
