Zhone Technologies Announces Milestones for MXK Platforms Deployed

OAKLAND, CAZhone Technologies announced that it reached two milestones for its MXK multiservice access node platforms: 2,000 MXK platforms have now been deployed worldwide, and 150 service providers have adopted the platform. Total subscriber capacity supported by these deployments now exceeds 14 million. Since introducing the platform in 2009, Zhone has focused its efforts on the fast-growing GPON, active Ethernet and VDSL2 markets.

Based on the success of the MXK, research firm IDC sees Zhone, which was founded in 1999 and was still relatively unknown in the FTTH arena five years ago, as a major player today. "Zhone is a top-five global player in the emerging FTTH category, based on our analysis of the market," says David Emberley, research manager of telecommunications infrastructure at IDC. "The strength of Zhone's position in the global FTTx market is due in large part to its robust product portfolio and targeted focus on access technologies. As a pure-play, Zhone faces tremendous competitive pressure from significantly larger vendors. Zhone's continued technology enhancements and its global customer diversity have enabled it to grow its FTTx deployments significantly in 2010 and 2011. The broadband access market is poised for an upgrade from copper based infrastructure to deep fiber and fiber to the home, and Zhone stands to gain further if it can execute its go-to-market strategy."

The Zhone FiberHome portfolio, which includes the MXK platform, has been adopted by both international and domestic carriers to expand broadband for residential and business users and to support mobile backhaul.

A few of the recent MXK deployments announced include:

- Alhambra-Grantfork Telephone Company – FTTH and multi-service deployment in Illinois

- Pulaski-White Rural Telephone Cooperative – Expanding broadband services in Indiana

- Hickory Telephone Company – Copper- and fiber-based RF triple-play deployment in western Pennsylvania

- QCOL – Next-generation access for FTTH triple-play network in northeastern United States

- Velocity – Empowering businesses with high speed Ethernet over Copper and VoIP services in northwest Pennsylvania.
