Maine is getting it Right: Learn from the Leaders Behind the Innovative Initiatives and Collaborations that are Accelerating Community Broadband Projects that Can Be Replicated to Provide the Right Boost to Launch Your Broadband Project

In November 2020, the first cohort members of the VETRO Cares for Maine Community Broadband Accelerator launched a focused six-month effort to move broadband communities through the planning, design and funding stages of their local projects.

Enabled through the highly successful state broadband office, ConnectMaine, VETRO Cares enlists the “it takes a village” mindset to encourage collaboration across numerous local stakeholders, both public and private, by providing a platform that creates a visual “single source of truth” for local mapping, data and network construction scenarios.

This workshop will introduce participants to a cross-section of state, local and private sector leaders in Maine who are helping create a fertile ecosystem where a wide array of approaches is flourishing to extend and build future proof fiber networks and close the digital divide once and for all.

Keynote: Smart Home & Healthy Home Trends: Are We Mainstream Yet?

More than one-third of US broadband households own at least one smart home device and one third own a home security system. Device makers and platform providers continue to strive to offer consumers an intelligent, automated, and unified experience that is also useful. The multifamily housing market, making up about 30% of all broadband households, has become increasingly important to device manufacturers as they seek to drive overall adoption of the smart home products and integrate with platforms.

This presentation includes insight into the key trends in the smart home and MDU market, including shifts in home services, adoption of connected devices, the future opportunity for healthcare and home solutions, and expanded use cases.

3:20pm – 4:10pm Broadband Services for MDUs

MDU residents want ubiquitous and seamless wireless connectivity. How do property owners ensure that connectivity is available and what part do both the providers and owners need to play in meeting the challenges of making in-home wireless 5G broadband work?

What is 5G and how can it benefit a property owner? What is managed wi-fi and how can it overcome the limitations of 5G in some buildings? What is CBRS and how might it fit into a solution to augment 5G? Is a traditional DAS system still an option despite its high cost to deploy and maintain? And finally, what about in-unit wired Internet and video services, how are those impacted by a solution decision?

The goal of this session is to help clarify persistent confusion about all these service options and what they really mean to a property owner and their residents.
